I’ve been thinking about this and something hit me as I started reading this post. I don’t really want to put it in a comment so if/when you get a chance, maybe we can set up a time to talk? You can email me or whatever (pretty sure that info is on my profile)…just let me know if you do or I probably won’t see it.

Thanks Rachel ... I'm in the middle of moving, setting up an art exhibit and full-time school on top of work so scheduling calls right now is really tricky but if you want to send me an email I'm at Kathryn.vercillo on gmail.

Understandable. I meant to say that it doesn’t have to be a call or anything but apparently that didn’t happen (blame it on lack of sleep). It was more that if I didn’t say it, I’d never follow through. 😂

I like what you're doing. I remember coming across your post where you were talking about tithing 10% to other creators, and I thought that was such a good idea and something I wanted to adopt myself.

The truth of the matter is that I'm simply not your target audience. Your ability to put ideas and writers together is beyond the scope of my intelligence. That aside, I have failed to make time to give your work the attention it deserves.

I'm sorry for that. An analysis this expansive is overwhelming to me.

That being said, I do hope that you find the subscribers you need, and that you learn and pivot from your experience. I know there is value in what you're doing. I wish you the best in your endeavors, Kathryn.

Thanks for the comment. Absolutely fine if nothing I write is what resonates or works for you but just wanted to draw your attention to some of the different types of things that I share here since there's many types of stuff.

For example, have you seen the visual interviews I do, where artists answer questions in images only? https://createmefree.substack.com/p/answer-in-images-art-and-mental-health-39b

Or my personal writing about my experiences with depression: https://createmefree.substack.com/p/depression-a-black-dog-an-elephant

Again, no worries if none of this interests or appeals or is right for you. None of us is right for everyone. But I try to make it easy to subscribe only to what you want to see and not receive all of the emails for everything so I just wanted you to have a chance to see what else is here.

Thanks very much for the mention, Kathryn. I'm looking forward to reading the other posts you mention.

Kathryn, you are truly a force here on Substack, constantly lifting authors up and showcasing work you find interesting, then connecting the work together in a sensible way. I very much understand and sympathize with your dilemma, and if there's anything I can do to help, please don't hesitate to reach out!

Thanks. I have a pretty solid idea now of how I'm going to change things here. I'll have a post later this month.

Thanks for the mention, Kathryn! What a collection of great content. I hope the people rally to support you. Also, still thinking about the mermaids 🧜‍♀️ and a San Francisco adventure sometime. Hope you have a good weekend!

Thank you for the kind mention. You are very generous in the way you pull these epic gatherings together. Hopefully you will find the level of support you require.

I know for many folk - us, definitely - it is hard to squeeze more money out of the budget when we are already committed to supporting other writers.

You will already know what needs to be done to strike a balance for your own workload, but I wonder - kindly - if you could reduce the amount of effort these demand from you - maybe one theme a week, illustrated with a handful of other people's articles.

Thanks for the mention. Yes, I absolutely understand that there's a "supply and demand" issue here on Substack meaning that if readers are already here as writers/readers and supporting other writers on the site then it reduces ability to pay more people. Makes perfect sense and is true for me as well.

I think ultimately I'm going to have to shift priorities to writing that's not specifically geared towards those already writing on Substack as a result. And I want to figure out the right balance for me in terms of continuing to build and be part of community here while also growing my own readership from external sources. We'll see.

I always love seeing what you've shared and appreciate that you take the time to give me your thoughts. <3

That shifting of priorities makes so much sense. At the heart of this is you and your creative capacity. Taking care of you is vital; evolving your practice is key. Watching with interest.

I’d be sorry to see these go as they are primarily what I subscribed for but I understand totally your position and am grateful we’ve had them as long as we have.

I appreciate you sharing this as I was beginning to feel like nobody really cared either way. That helps me to know more about what I want to shift here.

Oh no I care! I love these Friday lists because you give me novelty ( in the form of new people to read) and novelty is really important to my mental health because it’s so linked to joy and life for me.

This really means a lot. I’ve been taking a little Substack break while I’m moving … we are all moved now and settling in and I love the new house so much … and I’ll be getting back to it next week so I’m glad to know this.

You deserve a break! And the nice house!
