This is SO very good Kathryn! Thank you for giving us the goodness of you and others. I can't wait to sign up for another writer and generously receive a subscription from you. THIS IS AMAZING!
I love your inspiration section today and look forward to diving into the rest.
Thank you so much. I really appreciate that. I look forward to seeing who you choose to subscribe to and getting that email so I can gift your year here!
Kathryn, I enjoy your writing, dunno how you avoid burnout and overwhelm, you are amazeballs!!
I really can’t subscribe, fixed income, any $$$ I have after rent, rx, food, goes to grandsons. But I can send you some crochet coin purses I made that you might like?
A week ago yesterday I took the ferry from SF to the V to spend the day w/g-kids. Sat on the aft deck, it was glorious. So excited, I was walking fast and stumbled, getting an instant goose egg on my forehead as I slammed my head into the sidewalk. I walked the rest of the way and had a good day but by the next day I had two swollen black eyes. It is a week later and I still look like death warmed over! I say all this because people will understand not wanting to go out looking like this, they will understand wearing hats and dark sunglasses, even in Safeway. They will sympathize with this pain. But it isn’t much different to me, I always have struggled to be out, to show up. (People always say: Just show up, that’s half the battle!) All I can do is smile gamely.
But I realized when I took a photo of my face that it was really a self-portrait, the me that no one sees and everyone says I am imagining and I have been taking meds for years to try to overcome: my own reality
SO this flukey injury has been oddly revealing and thus nourishing to me.
Also nourishing is free old movies on YT, actors and directors and writers and costumers that I think of as friends: Dan Duryea, Ida Lupino, James Mason, Marilyn Monroe, Raymond Burr, Edmund O’Brien, Billy Wilder, Dean Martin, Hedy Lamarr, and so many more who have been with me thru so many sleepless nights. Also, Libby from SFPL, often a book a day when I cannot get out.
Well I do appreciate so much all the artists you discuss, Kathryn, so many I never heard of or didn’t know much about.
Lately, I am so enamored of Bispo’s work, so in awe of it. Never have I longed to see the real exhibits so much.
Pardon my rambling but again, coin purses! I have a lot to choose from 😅 also, vintage clothes you may have if you like.
Thank you so much for sharing about your injury and the realizations that you had around it. Very powerful stuff. So many of us with "invisible illnesses" can definitely relate to that.
Libby is great and you can also use Canopy through SFPL to watch old movies.
I would love to take you up on your offer of coin purses and vintage clothes. Very generous. And I'm all about bartering so happy to swap you a year of paid subscription features to Create Me Free in exchange. What's the best way to make this happen?
It's so good! You're talking about really important aspects of the topic in an intelligent, interesting way. Also happy to see Pathological is on sale ... it's how I originally found your work.
Kathryn, you are the Substack equivalent of the rising tide which lifts all boats. You are a natural connecter of people, and I think it is safe to say I speak for many of your readers in saying we love you for it.
- Thanks, as always, for the mentions.
- Succession: I need to watch the last season.
- I must put Edie Brickell on once I move from the deck to escape to the A/C inside.
- As a teacher, I am less excited about the workload of getting back to school, but I am looking forward to the daily interaction with students.
- RE: Notes. It is a place to share good reads and be more casual. I share things I want others to read and small glimpses into my life to create a more personal connection in the community. It is a safe place to share something not worthy of an entire article, yet likely good at creating connection and community. I have been enjoying Notes much more since I adopted this approach. YMMV
In closing, I love the layout of this post. Recently, as I feel like I am becoming part of the community, the scientific me, who loves to measure things, wants to create a spreadsheet of all my activity on Substack.
* Who did I mention, who did I read, who did I restock?
* Who liked my posts, my Notes, commented, or restacked?
This inner scientist is a bit obsessive, but I *don’t* want the feelings of connection to simply wash over me. I want to “slow the flow” and recognize the interactions with intention. I see this as what you are doing here publicly, which returns me to my opening comment about you being 'the rising tide.' You set an excellent example of how we can all be better on Substack.
Thank you for all of this. I love the way you've expressed your take on Notes ... exactly that - it's not necessarily right for a full post but it's something you do want to share and discuss with the community (and sometimes that later leads to a full post.)
I love the spreadsheet idea. I'm very halfway with those types of things - love the idea, start to do it, don't do it in a way that actually makes sense and abandon it :) My inner nerd loves it and isn't quite suited for it. But as you said this is my version of that and it really helps me connect more deeply with everyone.
I hope you were able to listen to some Edie Brickell.
Apple Music does not have the old album with “I wish I was your lover!” The only albums with the New Bohemians were from 2018 on. I need me some of that old school EB&TNB. Perhaps Spotify. I will check again. That said, I did listen to the two EB&TNB album on Apple Music. It worked well, as the songs were unfamiliar, and therefore not distracting. :^)
I am glad the spreadsheet idea makes sense to someone other than myself. However, I don’t think I like the cold feel of a spreadsheet. It may be great for the task, but it just feels...cold. So, my new idea, which just passed through my mind like a butterfly in search of a flower, is to either use a dedicated Substack Notebook, of the ‘dead tree’ variety, and take notes in there. However, just writing that triggers the “I can’t do the Bullet Journal method” me, which is real, as I end up *needing* to add pages as topics grow. As such, my idea to try the BuJo method was to use a ring binder, but I did not like that either.
So, where am I right now on this?
My next step is to keep running notes in my ‘at hand’ notebook, and try to organize my Substack interaction notes in Obsidian. (Ah, and now I see I am writing an article as a comment...)
To be continued as a full post on my ‘Stack some day soon. 😆
we all need a bit of laugh. happy that it have that effect

I use Spotify and they have shooting rubber bands which is my favorite album
Keep playing with notebook ideas. You’ll find one that works. Keep me posted ... I’m curious how it unfolds.
And this is precisely why folk recommend your generosity and insight to other folk! Lovely stuff, Kathryn
I get as much out of it as anyone else. Thank you. <3
Thank you for the connections you inspire and nurture, every week and regardless of how much you have to attend to.💚
Where we put our time matters and this is a place where I want to put my time. <3
Hi Kathryn- just released my second piece! Would you kindly have time to have a gander? Best wishes-
