What are Visual Interviews?
These are interviews that people are invited to answer using only images or any combination of image/text that feels right for them. A few people have even answered in sound!
Why?
Sometimes words aren’t sufficient for explaining ourselves, particularly when dealing with challenging subjects, such as the relationship between art and mental health which is the subject of the Create Me Free interview series.
Just a few of the reasons why images are an important alternative to traditional interview formats:
People with a trauma history can find explaining things in words triggering.
Many people from marginalized backgrounds have a history of having their words used against them.
Neurodiverse people of all kinds often feel misunderstood when trying to explain themselves in words.
Non-verbal communication provides critical information and should be valued as much as words.
A Few Important Things About These Interviews
I offer a form for artists to fill out at their own pace.
Artists are asked to utilize only their original images (art, photos) for their responses.
Here’s how you learn more and can submit your own visual interview for a featured here on Create Me Free:
My Own Visual Interview Answers
Here are my responses to the questions I ask others:
Interviews in Images + Sound
A few people have incorporated original music/ sound art into their responses, which is something that I have found to be so powerful! Big thanks to
andInterviews in Images + Text
Some people answer primarily in images but also include text. Often the text is part of the images - words added to a drawing or painting, comic-art style responses - but sometimes they have been added separately by the artist to enhance their visual response. Gratitude to

And some people answer only in images. I’ve organized these by the primary medium utilized in the responses but most of these artists can’t be boxed in and I encourage you to check out the full breadth of their creativity at their own publications.

And a Special Bonus Visual Interview
99% of the time I ask that these interviews are personal responses utilizing the individual’s own artwork but this was a special collaboration with
who is “a historian, writer, and doctoral scholar of early twentieth-century art, literature and history, with a particular interest in the life and work of the Bloomsbury Group.” I love her extensive knowledge of this aspect of art and was very moved by her visual exploration of emotion through art history:
Thank you for inviting me to take part, Kathryn. And for sharing the interview again here 🤎
Thank you again Kathryn for including me in your delightful project!!!!! 💙💚
