What To Expect from a Creative Health Navigation Call

Some housekeeping and a guide to prepare you for our time together

Creative Health Navigation is similar to therapy or coaching, but it’s not either one of those things. This guide explains how it differs and what to expect.

What Is Creative Health Navigation?

Creative Health Navigation is about seeing patterns in the present so you can choose your own path forward.

  • A guided exploration of your creative health

  • Pattern recognition and reflection in real time

  • Space to think out loud and make connections

  • Your session to use however feels most useful

I’ll offer reflections, thoughts, exercises, and suggestions. I believe in letting sessions unfold organically, following what’s most alive for you in the moment and what intuitively arises for either one of us.

What This Isn’t

It’s important for you to know:

This isn’t therapy. Although I have a Masters in Psychology, I chose not to pursue licensure. I am not a licensed therapist, and I’m not diagnosing or treating specific mental health conditions. If you need therapeutic support, I’m happy to provide referrals to licensed therapists.

This isn’t coaching. I’m not setting goals for you or holding you accountable to action steps. You won’t get homework or commitments.

This is navigation. I help you see where you are. I help you to understand the blocks you’re running into, verbalize and reframe your narratives, identify existing strengths and resources, figure out what does and doesn’t work for you, and you choose how and where to go next.

The Frame of: You Are Here

Here’s how I like to explain it:

  • Therapy often (not always) looks backward at how the past influences you

  • Coaching often (not always) looks forward at what the goals are for the future

  • Mapping is all about “you are here now”. It’s about orienting to exactly where you are at this moment, what’s true for you now, what feels right and what doesn’t. A map can lead you to a new place; you can decide where to go and what path you want to take to get there. But you can only do that if you know where you are located on the map. So, we use these sessions to help you orient to that.

How I Hold This Work

You are the expert on yourself. The answers are already within you. My job is to help you see what you might not be able to see on your own.

If something I say doesn’t fit right, don’t take it on. You can sit with it. You can reject it. You can hold it lightly. If you want, you can tell me. Sometimes I’ve misunderstood what you meant. Sometimes I’ve miscommunicated what I see. Sometimes what we push back against is actually what’s true for us that we aren’t ready to acknowledge yet. And sometimes it’s just my incorrect interpretation.

Working through any of that is valuable. There’s no such thing as “getting it wrong” in this conversation.

I trust your knowing. Even if you don’t trust it yet, I do.

What Happens During the Session

We’ll spend an hour exploring how your health (physical, mental, emotional, environmental) intersects with your creativity using the Creative Health Cartography framework (how health/environment impact creative process, content, medium, productivity, identity, business.) You can choose to look very directly at any of those or they can just be a background frame for the work.

I’ll ask questions, reflect what I’m hearing, and help you see patterns you might not see yourself. Think of me as someone who can help you read the map of your creative life when you're too close to see it clearly.

Things that may (or may not) happen during our session:

  • Quick “aha” realizations or slow unfolding insights

  • Physical sensations as patterns surface; grounding or breathing exercises to help stay present if this occurs

  • Silences while we think or process, times when you talk a lot, times when I talk a lot …

  • Laughter when something clicks or feels absurd; Tears when something lands deeply

  • Moments of “I don’t know” (totally fine)

  • Pushback or resistance to something I say (totally fine also)

  • Guided exercises or prompts if they feel useful

  • Brief writing or drawing if that helps

All of it is welcome. There’s no right way to do this.

Sessions truly do unfold organically but a common pattern is:

  • Opening (5-10 min): I’ll set the frame for our time together and answer any questions. You can express any concerns or questions.

  • Exploration (40-45 min): I’ll ask questions across the six domains. Or sometimes people find that they just want to start talking where their thoughts are. Either way, I’ll be listening for patterns: where things flow, where they’re stuck, what’s yours versus what’s imposed, where your energy is.

  • Wrap up (10-15 min): Although I’ll be responding throughout the session, this is the time when I’ll share some of the key patterns I’ve identified, strengths and resources you already have that may be helpful to work with, and anything else that resonates strongly from the session. You’ll tell me what resonates.

After the Session

Within 3 days, I’ll follow up via email (or voice message if you prefer) with additional thoughts.

Why? I tend to continue processing our conversation for days after we meet. New connections emerge, patterns become clearer, resources come to mind that might be helpful.

I don’t like to rush to try to figure everything out during the call because that’s not how patterns best reveal themselves. However, I do like to share those reflections while they’re fresh, which is why I don’t wait until a next session to share them.

You’re welcome to respond, ask questions, or just let it land. If you think it would be helpful to book your next session, you can do that immediately. There’s no expectation either way.

About Ongoing Work

This initial session gives you a foundation. Many people find that deeper insights come from continued exploration over multiple sessions. Patterns become clearer when we track how they shift over time.

And, of course, we learn to work better together when we’ve had a chance to get to know one another and develop rapport.

But there’s no pressure. Your session is complete on its own. If you want to keep exploring, I’m here. If not, that’s absolutely fine too.

Questions?

If anything is unclear or you have questions before we meet, just email me. Otherwise, I’ll see you on our scheduled day.

I’m looking forward to our conversation.
