Meet Amy Stauter, Wearing The Same Dress Throughout Dressember to Fight Human Trafficking
Doing a small act for one month can make a big difference!
Dressember isn’t over, yet, so there’s still time to raise awareness about this creative fight against human trafficking. Interviewing participants is the way I’m doing that this year. See all interviews here.
I am donating 10% of all December Substack income to Dressember.
What does Dressember mean to you? Why are you participating this year?
Dressember is an amazing non-profit organization that does great work. It's been easy for me to participate as I love wearing dresses anyway!
Have you participated in the past? If so, what have the best parts and the most challenging parts been?
Yes, this is my 8th time doing Dressember. The hardest part is posting daily pictures on the socials. I know I get sick of seeing my face; I'm sure others grow weary as well!
What does "mental health" mean to you? How does it relate to your own life and/or your understanding of the Dressember cause?
Getting people back on their feet after being trafficked is so important. Supporting them in all ways, especially with their mental health is paramount to a successful healing process.
In what ways does Dressember allow you to express yourself creatively while raising awareness and funds?
Taking a daily photo forces me to get dressed and do my hair/makeup. 😉
In what other ways do you think creativity and mental health intersect through the Dressember project?
Getting the word out about an important cause can be scary and daunting. Using social media helps because people are accustomed to seeing all types of information online. It's also fun to see all of the other advocates doing Dressember!
What is the aspect of Dressember's cause that you most want to highlight?
The money they raise actually saves lives.
What do you wish people knew about human trafficking that you suspect most people don't know?
It's more common/prevalent/complicated than most of us ever know.
In your own words, how does wearing a dress every day for a month make a difference?
Doing a small act for one month can make a big difference!
What do you want people to know about your specific fundraising team and goal?
We keep raising our fundraising goal because people have been so generous!
What else do you want to make sure people know about the Dressember cause?
You can donate all year long, not just in December.
Tell us a little bit about creativity, mental health, and/or the way that they intersect in your own life (outside of Dressember stuff) ...
It's so important to have a creative outlet in life to keep learning and reaching and growing.
What's another random thing we might be interested to know about you?
I'm wearing the same dress all month for Dressember this year.
You can donate directly to Amy’s Dressember fundraiser here.
If you love this work, consider a paid subscription. I am donating ten percent of all December Substack income to Dressember. PLUS, for every five new annual subscriptions this month, I’m immediately subscribing to another Substacker to support other creatives writing about art and mental health.
